Deep ocean observatories at fixed point in the ocean, so-called moorings, are typically made of a single column of strong wire stretching from the sea surface to the sea floor. Several scientific instruments and sensors are attached in clusters like mini constellations all the way down.
In the framework of the French MOOSE project (Mediterranean Ocean Observing System for the Environment), a monitoring system has been setup with 6 moorings in the NW Mediterranean Sea to better understand the physical and biogeochemical forcing on marine ecosystem (mixed layer depth, remineralization, atmospheric inputs, convection, cascading). This eulerian network is providing a unique time series in coordination with marine observatories network that is gradually taking place in the Mediterranean Sea (MONGOOS, FIXO3, EMSO, HYDROCHANGES).
