The main features of the MOOSE project are a high diversity of platforms, data types and qualification and collecting processes. The data provided by MOOSE contain continental (associated to rivers inputs and atmospheric deposition) and marine data, physical or chemical data, vertical profiles or time series and are produced in real time or delayed mode. To avoid duplication and facilitate interoperability, the Moose data management scheme is relying on existing structures where real time data and delayed mode data can be requested:
The Coriolis data center is a multi-organism project sustained by IFREMER, SHOM, CNRS, IRD, MeteoFrance and IPEV. Initially designed for operational oceanography purposes, the Coriolis data centre has been adapted to also fulfil the needs of science oriented projects and delayed mode data management. This is why, it was a good opportunity to link MOOSE data management needs to the service proposed by Coriolis. The concerned marine data are gliders data, hydrological data and traps particles from the moorings, hydrological and biogeochemical data from monthly cruises and annual large-scale cruises. An internal document (MOOSE user manual) has been prepared to define the metadata and the basic procedures to gather marine data files.
Because real time data management needs to be fast and efficient, real time data from MOOSE have to follow the already existing format and collecting process used by Coriolis. The data do not have to be controlled by the providers before they are sent to Coriolis. The data QC is made in the data center automatically before loading in the data base. An easy, email data sending process have been decided to collect CTD from ships and to allow the diffusion of the MOOSE data in real time to MISTRALS and global diffusion program such as MyOcean.
Quality control procedures applied to real-time marine data archived in MOOSE/Coriolis are those already and generally applied to data gathered by Coriolis and follow international recommendations (Argo, Gosud, Ocean sites, EGO Gliders…).
On the contrary to real time data, delayed mode data are collected, controlled and analyzed by the PI. To simplify the delayed mode process, homogenized QC and follow their production, the MOOSE head office gathers, all year long, data from the different delayed mode platforms from all the PI’s. Once a year MOOSE head office delivers the global data set. In this way, there is only one person to refer to for the Coriolis operator.
The quality control is applied as soon as possible after the data collection and by the teams in charge of the data collection. The quality control procedures will remain the same within the project, in order to insure the consistency of the whole dataset. If any deviation is necessary a re-processing would be required as well as proper acknowledgement.
